Jaisalmer is a town of Rajasthan in the India. Jaisalmer is named after its founder Rawal Jaisal and also called as the Golden city of India. Jaisalmer means "the Hill Fort of Jaisal". Jaisalmer is because the yellow sand presents a yellowish-golden touch to the city & its surrounding area.

Transport

Jaisalmer is the terminus of a Broad gauge branch railway of Indian Railways and junctioning with the main system at Jodhpur. The Palace on Wheels has a programmed stop at Jaisalmer. The place is also connected with other cities.

Attractions of Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer Fort

The fort is built in the year of 1156 by the Bhati Rajput ruler Jaisal; it is located on Trikuta Hill and had been the scene of many battles. Its huge sandstone walls are a tawny lion color during the day, changing to a magical honey-gold as the sun sets. This is a living fort and about a quarter of city's people still live inside the fort. The core attractions inside the fort are:

  • Raj Mahal (Royal palace)
  • Jain temples
  • The Laxminath temple

Havelis

The popular havelis in Jaisalmer are:

  • Patwon-ki-Haveli:  It was built by Guman Chand Patwa (and afterward by his five sons), a wealthy merchant and financier who had over three hundred trading centers from Afghanistan to China. This elaborate five-storey complex took fifty years to complete. This is the biggest, the most wonderful, and the highly structured of Jaisalmer havelis.
  • Salim Singh-ki-Haveli: It was constructed by the scheming Prime Minister Salim Singh in 1815. It has a marvelously arched roof capped with blue cupolas and carved brackets in the form of peacocks.
  • Nathmalji-ki-Haveli: It was built by a Prime Minister of princely state of Jaisalmer. Its fascia is a riot of ornamentation: flora, birds, elephants, soldiers, a bicycle and even a steam engine.
